Cariad Lloyd: The Freewheelin' Cariad Lloyd

alt

Cariad Lloyd is a little gem. The Fosters Best Newcomer nominee is back this year with more hilarious and silly characters – Moomin Mama, Cockney Sam, Head of Health and Safety in Asda Kitty, Joooooey Bechamel, and little Andrew (oh little Andrew why did you make me laugh so much?).

From the beginning (when she comes ‘freewheelin’ onto the stage on the bicycle) you could tell this was going to be something special. The whole show has achieved the fine balance of strange to intelligent material that so many other shows in this years fringe are trying to achieve. And as she performed/acted her first character Moomin’ Mama the Scandanavian detective (brilliant) I sat up and hoped to god I didn’t miss anything.

This is character comedy at its best. Lloyd’s incredible and original writing and then funny but committed acting is the best thing I’ve seen this fringe. The odds were stacked against her too - the room was horribly hot and I was suffering from a bout of reviewer fatigue but she had me (and everyone else) in stitches. This is a well deserved five-star show and I want to take it home so I can see it over and over again.

NB: She is obviously a girl of many many talents as on top of Freewheelin’, she’s also starring in Austentatious (part of the Free Fringe), the improvised Jane Austen Comedy that is being awarded 5 stars literally everywhere...
