Box Tale Soup’s inventive adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 breathes new life into the dystopian classic with striking creativity and a powerful sense of purpose. Told through the innovative use of puppetry, recycled materials, and a cast of just three performers, this retelling captures the oppressive atmosphere of Orwell’s world while offering something refreshingly original.

The use of minimal but resourceful set and prop design mirrors the bleakness of a society stripped of individuality. Seamless set transitions and strong characterisation from the actors make it easy to follow the shifting characters, despite the compact cast. Vocal contributions from Dame Joanna Lumley, Sophie Aldred, and Simon Russell Beale lend additional gravitas, adding additional depth to the performance.

The shorter running time for a Fringe season, however, makes the complex narrative harder to track. This is a minor drawback in a production that has an eerie message with clear relevance to contemporary society. This version of 1984 encourages audiences to reflect on their role in shaping the future.

Now in their twelfth year at the Edinburgh Fringe, Box Tale Soup once again proves their talent for reimagining stories in ways that feel urgent, poignant, and relevant. With a full-length tour planned for next spring, audiences will soon have the chance to experience the complete vision.
