“A Jaffa Cake has the power to change someone’s whole day.” 

Based on the real 1991 tribunal, Gigglemug Theatre dramatize the question that has “plagued our species” since the treat’s conception: is it a cake or biscuit? More family friendly than the inclusion of the couplet “HMRC” and “VAT”, would suggest, the show’s catchy melodies and punny confectionary jokes are ingenious. 

In the set list is a witty Hamilton-style rap battle between Jaffa’s gawky lawyer and the haughty high-kicking prosecution. All memorable and endearing, the characters have satisfying arcs and each one is given a chance to shine within the 70 minute tale. A notable standout is the villain song performed by a bowler hatted boogey-man manifestation of ‘The Tax Man’. 

A Jaffa Cake Musical proves that a cake (or biscuit!) does have the ability to transform a Fringe- goer’s day for the best.
