Aussie comic Annabelle James’s stage presence radiates a sunshine-bright warmth that instantly lights up the gloom of The Caves in Cowgate. 

Post-show discussions are always a strong indicator of success, and for James, the consensus was clear: “YES! I had the exact same experience!” Relatability paired with a confident humility is the key to her charm. While silly moments like the stand-out skit about almost being run over by her own mother resonate with a wider audience, her material hits hardest with her core demographic: 20- and 30-somethings, LGBTQ+ audience members and anyone navigating the daunting task of starting over as an expat.

Expect relatability over originality, but don’t underestimate the skill required to command a room with pure presence. Anyone can tell a joke, far fewer can make an entire audience feel seen. Her effortless delivery and steady eye contact make the performance feel conversational. A unique takeaway from the set is how it fosters connection, not only does James feel like a close friend by the end but she creates an environment where you feel like you might leave with a new friend from the crowd.

Ultimately, her hour feels like a pep talk from the best kind of stranger in a club bathroom. A warm reassurance that life’s most embarrassing moments are universal (even if few of us have dodged a vehicle driven by our mothers) and worth celebrating.
