In Slugageddon!, Benny Shakes brings a vibrant, participatory children’s experience to the Pleasance Courtyard, offering a unique blend of science-themed fun and interactive storytelling. With its focus on composting, gardening, and environmental awareness, the show leans into an educational slant that feels more akin to a science centre workshop than traditional children’s theatre, but with the theatrical charisma of a seasoned children’s presenter.
Shakes is a natural entertainer for younger audiences. His energetic delivery and infectious enthusiasm ensure that every child feels seen and involved, inviting them to play, interact, and learn through a series of lively games and challenges. The atmosphere is welcoming and accessible, with a tone pitched perfectly for audiences aged 10 and under.
However, while the show’s games are undeniably fun, their narrative integration feels somewhat loose. Moments that should progress the story can sometimes feel like standalone activities, and although the arc is tied together by a climactic “final boss” and a neat environmental message, the storytelling suffers slightly from a lack of cohesion. The show rewards patience with its finale, but some tighter dramaturgy throughout would strengthen the pacing and narrative clarity.
Visually, the production is playful and resourceful. A projected garden creates a charming backdrop, although the stage does start to feel crowded as props and set pieces accumulate during the more physically active segments. Nonetheless, there’s an inventive use of space that reflects the DIY spirit of children’s theatre on the Fringe.
Ending on a cliff hanger and teasing a return next year, Slugageddon! is clearly envisaged as part of a larger world. For young families looking for a fun, interactive experience with a light environmental message, this is a solid festival pick. Yet one can’t help but wish for a little more story to underpin the silliness.
