BIRTHMARKED

Words: Caitlin Finnerty

Birthmarked by Brook Tate offers an extraordinary fusion of vulnerability and artistry. The stunning venue, adorned with three colossal crystal chandeliers, becomes the backdrop for his unforgettable performance, and from the moment he steps into the spotlight, you’re captivated by his charm and courage.

Brook’s powerhouse vocals are backed by an incredible band of five, expertly playing instruments including guitars, drums, double bass, violin, piano and saxophone.

The transformation of both Brook and the band from sombre suits to full glam on stage mirrors his journey to authenticity. His struggle with being cut off from his Jehovah’s Witness community and family due to his sexuality is deeply moving, and his resilience shines through in every note.

Whimsy and charm is added to the show during moments like painting himself into a zebra, having conversations with a giant whale named Gail, and dancing under a giant disco ball shoe. These moments and more beautifully capture how ‘life can transform into art’. Directed by Sally Cookson, Birthmarked is a standing ovation-worthy performance that resonates long after the final note. Tate’s journey from vulnerability to empowerment, coupled with his band’s outstanding musicianship and a touch of whimsy, creates an unforgettable show that celebrates acceptance and self-discovery.
