Bubble Schmeisis is a memorable show, largely because of the setting, but also because of Nick Cassenbaum’s charismatic performance. This production is set in a large, functioning sauna, for which the audience have to get changed into their swimwear to experience this piece of theatre. Cassenbaum is a natural storyteller, appearing completely unphased and at ease within this space where he is in amongst the audience members and where the temperature feels like it is continually rising. With this unconventional setting bringing unconventional risks, such as that of an audience member fainting, Cassenbaum adopts the role of facilitator as well as storyteller. He incorporates regular check-ins with the audience and guides shared group breaths, which also act as timely pauses to signal transitions and changes in tone, and add to the show’s flow and engaging nature.
Complementing the production’s setting having a level of ridiculousness, the content of the piece is, likewise, largely playful, full of silly and light-hearted anecdotes. Cassenbaum builds laughs through incorporating well-timed physical comedy and is supported by two excellent musicians with similarly perfect timing, whose music and jingles enhance the fun. Alternatively, as much as the sauna is a unique and entertaining setting, how much it adds to the theatre experience is debatable.
