It is a beautifully sunny and warm day when I go to see California Dreams. I imagine it’s almost akin to a summer day in California, somewhere along the coast with a breeze and that hazy orange glow. Now, I grew up in the deserts of California, so for me, walking into the venue, thickly warm and soggy, was far more reminiscent of the 40-degree summers I experienced as a child.
It’s not until I’ve taken a seat that I realise I’m wearing an old, faded California Republic vest. Is it on brand? Is it cringe? You can decide.
Hannah Richards and Dan Clews plays the audience through a set list that includes Tambourine Man, God Only Knows, and Big Yellow Taxi. The man sat next to me knows all the words and sings along, as do many in the crowd. Folks were tapping their feet, clapping their hands, and once instruments have been handed out, happily jingling the tambourine and other percussion instruments with delight. It’s a pleasant and heart-warming way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Richards and Clews are incredibly talented singers as they weave songs from the era, with the stories of the artists and the place where so many of them emerged from: Laurel Canyon, California.
It’s an enjoyable afternoon show with some wonderfully performed classic tunes.
