Chiquitita tells Cecilia Gentili’s autobiographical story in “Red Ink,” sharing with the audience the struggles of being a trans woman growing up in Argentina, but the struggles are all told with a humorous bent, a wink, and plenty of physical comedy. Chiquitita takes the stage with grace, glamor, and confidence in this meticulously written show. The anecdotes and snapshot memories weave together questions of faith, community, and belonging through Gentili’s musings on her life. 

Gentili’s easy and deft humour and Chiquitita’s care for her story are all evident in the well paired writing and performance. All of the stories, from the comical recollections of her religious upbringing to the tribulations of not quite finding love, are presented with wit and professionalism. Chiquitita conveys the story with a personal touch, a statuesque persona, and willingness to be incredibly silly. She brings the audience into the scenes with a strong stage presence and control of the material, as well as distinct characterization of the people that altered Gentili’s life on her journey. 

Chiquitita has a clear passion for expressing Gentili’s lessons, concerns and triumphs to the audience. And the triumphs are absurd and unexpected, unusual yet justified. 

A very intriguing history and presentation of a time and place told with precision and care.
