Virginia Gay’s joyous, gender-flipping retelling of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac is an absolute must-see. This production is a fresh, achingly funny and nuanced queer love story that skilfully balances respect for the original text with a bold, modern identity of its own. And it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Cyrano, a brilliant wordsmith, grapples with her perceived unattractiveness and unworthiness of love—particularly the love of her adored Roxanne. Roxanne, however, is captivated by the butch, masculine soldier Yan, setting the stage for a compelling love triangle.

The six-person cast are impeccable and hit every comedic mark. They hark back to the original, insisting they are ‘fully-formed characters’ which they are. Featuring Tessa Wong, David Tarkenter, and Tanvi Virmani, their distinct characters make for hilarious content.

With fresh eyes Cyrano explores queer identity and queer love while upholding universal themes of self-doubt and longing for love. Gay’s subverted ending is a triumph, leaving you smiling and with a party hat.
