The term “Soft Boy” typically referrers to an adult, cisgender, male who challenges gender stereotypes through his physical appearance, attitude, interests; the epitome of emotional intelligence.

Elliot opens his set by discussing a recent breakup with a girlfriend who he considered to be from a different social class to him who seemed from the outset to be a much more enlightened, learned individual compared to his South London working class cage fighting routes. But Elliot quickly subverts stereotypes as he discusses his ex-girlfriend’s disgusted response to him when he discusses his
sexuality which initiated the breakup.

Elliot gears up to fight in cage-match against an opponent who he has been warned against fighting. Meanwhile, his father whom he lives with is diagnosed with throat cancer and the world seems like a pressure cooker about to boil over any moment. He begins to realise that it is important to chat openly and frankly about his feelings. Maybe bear-knuckled boxing isn’t the best way to go about it. Elliot finds the humour in a heartfelt, often brutally honest performance. He strives to confront unhealthy thinking patterns and behaviours in the wake of horrendous news.

The experience of becoming a primary carer for his father as they both cope with his cancer diagnosis has brought the both of them closer together. They both have become more comfortable in sharing their feelings openly. This is the emotional crux of the show.

Whilst, admittedly not laugh a minute, the audience are engrossed by Elliot’s storytelling.
