Ian Smith: Foot Spa Half Empty

Words: Caitlin Finnerty

4 Stars

Ian Smith’s Foot Spa Half Empty is a warm, effortlessly funny hour that proves you don’t need political hot takes or crude gags to keep a room laughing. Returning to the Fringe with his easygoing brand of observational comedy, Smith builds the show around some disappointing test results from a fertility clinic, opening up about his low sperm count with self-deprecating charm. It’s a topic many men shy away from, and Smith’s decision to make it funny feels both refreshing and quietly important.

Between the more personal material, he roams through offbeat tangents, like a story about a seagull wielding a steak knife in a beer garden, or his ongoing dislike of competent skiers (“all the gear, no idea” very much applies to him). His crowd work is sharp but friendly, and his knack for weaving call backs into the set (and even a cheeky “flashforward”) gives the hour a satisfying rhythm. There’s even some accidental drama when an audience member leaves early to catch another show, prompting Smith to speculate on possible reasons. From upgraded flyer thickness to seamless product placement, Smith revels in the small details, making Foot Spa Half Empty an awkwardly relatable and thoroughly enjoyable hour of British humour.
