James Barr (of The Breakfast Show on Hits Radio) starts the performance by saying that he’s doing this show in hopes that it will prevent somebody from going through what he went through in his abusive relationship… Before also stating that he’s doing it for revenge. Which was the perfect set up for the overall tone of the experience.

I’m Sorry I Hurt Your Son (Said My Ex to My Mum) is both funny and sad, truthful and silly,
hurtful and important. Jabs at the royal family, jokes about the Titanic, and a singalong moment
don’t necessarily seem like things you would hear in reference to a show about domestic
abuse, but everything weaves together perfectly. Laughs and tragedy in a bizarre medley. As
the sign states outside the venue; domestic violence isn’t funny, but James’ jokes are.

At the start of the show, James talks to several members of the audience, then references them
by name throughout the set. Doing this, he creates a space that makes the room feel like it’s full
of friends and that you’re all on this funny, traumatic roller coaster together.

After the show, James was waiting outside the venue with flyers containing a QR Code that links
to resources for those in abusive situations needing help. Brilliant show.
