Jarvis Cocker at Leith Theatre

Jarvis Cocker could still attract a sellout crowd even if it was just himself on stage playing the triangle for an hour and a half, such is the spellbinding quality of the former Pulp frontman.

A sell-out crowd of devout Jarvis fans packed every inch of the Leith Theatre to catch a glimmer of their hero. Tonight though was all about his new project Jarv Is.

Opening with the as yet unreleased ‘Sometimes I Am Pharaoh’ Cocker strides out with a hand mirror whilst navigating through a thick cloud of smoke which filled the stage.

Though many won’t be familiar with this song, or in-fact many of the songs, it doesn’t stop them from being fully engrossed in the spectacle. There’s not a weak link to be found in Jarv Is, the band make their way through an array of instruments including guitars, violin, drums, harp, synth, saxophone and more to give each new song a good amount of layers not dissimilar from Radiohead in terms of experimentation. An impressive light display and at one stage a shimmering disco ball adds an extra ingredient to each song.

Songs from the singer’s back catalogue including ‘Further Complications’, ‘Mary’ and ‘His ‘n’ Hers’ slotted in well amongst newer sounds to give a decent variety. New song ‘Must I Evolve’ was met with rapturous energy and a cacophony of audience harmonies.

The peak and easily the song which should have ended the night ‘Running The World’ felt particularly important given the current political climate.

All in all, a night which didn’t disappoint from a frontman that nearly thirty years into his career still feels every bit as important, particularly when backed by an immensely talented new collective.
