Upon entering the venue, a bizarre sight caught my attention: an audience member wearing a plant pot on their head. Moments later, it was clear this wasn’t a fashion statement but Kate Dolan herself, setting the tone for an hour of quirky, silly, self-aware stand-up.

Returning to the Edinburgh Fringe, Dolan presents a set that playfully navigates everything from wine-fuelled girls’ nights to the oddly intimate shame of having “rain sounds” top your Spotify Wrapped. She also can’t take a drink of water in front of a silent audience, so she has to keep you laughing.

Dolan’s inner critic, or intrusive thoughts, critique her show throughout. Her set is technically sound, but some moments lacked authenticity. There’s a distinct attempt to strike a chord with a “Gen Z” audience, yet much of the material seems to resonate more with an older demographic. Still, Dolan’s commitment to the bit makes it an enjoyable hour.
