Words: Katie McCulloch
Katherine and Pierre by Talksmall is a creation of seamlessly silly drag and lip sync madness. Whisked into their world of weird and wild, the eccentric duo immediately have the audience in cahoots and in awe of their talents.
We see Katherine (Bobbie Twaddle) and Pierre’s (Ellena Begley) moments of smitten-ness with each other: their love, angst, and other exaggerated vignettes of their relationship, all performed to the soundtrack of Katy Perry. Both performers are excellent dancers and bring precision to every move and lift they do, offering nuance to their nonsense. Using only office chairs as their props, the pair slide with synchronicity and perform a very inventive and playful piece.
Contradicting their cartoonish costumes, the pairs choreography and tech is fiercely sharp. The oddly loveable couple engross the audience and occasionally offer some welcomed repulsion; the pair thrive in meshing ugly with sweetness.
Dance, clowning, and mime are all mastered in this tale, leaving the audience invested and hungry for more.
