Larry Dean’s Dodger at Assembly Hall was a stellar introduction to the comedian, with his infectious energy and sharp wit immediately winning over the audience. The show revolves around his life, exploring themes of identity and family, all anchored by memories of his beloved gran.

Dean’s material is rich in callbacks and layered jokes, blending personal anecdotes with broader cultural observations. He tackles everything from his Scottish roots to his autism diagnosis and complex relationships, threading these themes together effortlessly.

Dean employs a variety of comedic techniques, including mimicry, self-deprecation, and absurdity. His portrayal of his partner’s Brummie accent, alongside a hilarious Gollum-esque rendition of his inner thoughts, showcases his talent for physical comedy and voice work. The routine flows naturally, with well-timed callbacks, such as his suncream joke, which starts as an offbeat comment but deepens when tied back to his mother.

The tone of Dodger is lively yet introspective. Dean navigates between light-hearted humour and more serious moments with finesse, never losing the audience’s engagement. His improvisational skill also shines – when an audience member attempts to sneak his friend in near the beginning of the show, he builds it into a humorous interaction – highlighting his quick thinking and charm.

By the end, the show takes on a more poignant tone as Dean reflects on his gran’s dementia. Even in these tender moments, he finds laughter, skilfully blending sentimentality with humour. Dean’s Dodger is a masterclass in balancing comedy with emotional depth, leaving a lasting impact on his audience.
