Level Up tells the story of 3 gamers who get ‘Jumanji-ed’ into a video game of life. Jo is told he can win the game by collecting tokens, only to realise that the grind of collecting coins is slow and laborious; Raf is quested with saving the world, only to be overwhelmed by the insurmountable bureaucracy to actually get something done; and Bobby is given the role of explorer, which essentially means wander and figure out your purpose. In a short hour that could have certainly gone longer, the musical explores how each of the characters goals and attempts to win are ruled by a rigged system, and that, in pursuing winning at all costs, it is so very easy to lose ourselves. In all, the concept and story are compelling, thought-provoking and very timely. Against the backdrop of a video game, it becomes energetic and buzzy.
I could and would absolutely love to see this on a bigger stage with a bigger production. The music and choreography were decent, but would benefit from a bigger production budget, becoming punchier to match the story. That being said, there were some brilliant musical numbers and incredible performers. The set and visual aids used were well done too, and I can only imagine how electric a full stage set and video game props would be. A story this gripping and clever definitely deserves a watch.
