Plunged into the world of Gendermess’ MESSY FRIENDS, which warps and twists assumptions of drag or gender through the surreal and beautiful vision of performance artist Ginava and their friends. This was a ‘relaxed performance’, with amendments to make the show more inclusive, which included an introduction to the cast: Ginava, Flynn V, Mary Lamb O’ God, Bobby Knox, Skyscraper and producer Brendan Ludlow. These are the characters we intimately get to know over the course of the hour, which culminates in a tinsel shower of kaleidoscopic beauty, with the whole cast. Robyn’s ‘Between the Lines’ plays, which is a fitting final song for the ‘no rules’ kind of drag that very organically refuses to adhere to any formula. All the insanely gorgeous and surprising costumes seem like completely natural decisions in this alternate realm.

Between each performance is an individual interview with the various artists discussing the driving force behind their personal art. ‘Energy’ and the value of engagement with the audience is frequently echoed, which feels pertinent as we are invited into the personal emotional and physical playground of the artists. There is a focus on the inner community of this group of MESSY FRIENDS and the community that extends to off the stage. This is part of the lasting impact, leaving the audience reeling with joy long beyond the evening of the show.

The power of the show is the oscillation between vulnerability and the unpredictable vibrant thunder of the stage. This blend of Burlesque and drag is hilarious and stunning and not akin to anything else. Audience go-ers walk away screaming life back into group chats after they leave this show.
