Writer and performer Bonni Chan delivers a phenomenal exploration into the vibrancy of childhood with themes of grief and growth. Under the lens of a series of letters written from renowned Hong Kong Author Xi Xi. The story follows the move away from British rule and runs alongside the story of the extinction of the male species of white rhinoceros serving as an overlay between the linking themes.

A series of narratives presented in different forms such as powerful poetry which Chan delivers directly to the audience whilst also having moments of direct address to other characters, such as her father and friend Amy. We are guided through an emotional journey and shown the changing landscape through a multitude of skilled multidisciplinary art forms. This production produced from Theatre Du Pif is part of the Hong Kong Soul Showcase this year.

The technical elements complemented the storytelling from Chan flawlessly. On stage we have live music from the talented Lay Chi-Bun who uses a variation of percussion instruments and accordion to create a live accompaniment. This applied with the use of soft sound effects and use of projection creates the most impressive multimedia experience.

This show is an underrated masterpiece and truly highlights the literacy works of Xi Xi, it is an essential watch for those around in these last few festival days.
