Two clowns take the stage in this quirky and surreal circus performance.

Performing in a dark void punctuated by specific and cultivated props, there is an element of suspension at play here – even when the clowns are not hanging precariously from a rope ladder. There is a sense of playfulness in the dark, as the clowns both swing between and balance on pain and joy, friendship and rivalry, competition and mutual support. 

The clowns themselves are compelling in their antics, stylistically mirroring each other while remaining distinct characters. While mostly mimed, one “speaks” in vocalisations that feel more like sound effects on a keyboard than the actual words he says. The other crawls and bounds across the stage like something between a rascal and a gremlin. Both embrace cartoonish expressions and physicality that kept the audience of all ages laughing – their embodiment of envious hunger was especially fun. 

While they take their time and indulge in comedic anti-climaxes as physical punchlines, clownish antics that endeared themselves to the young audience, the highlight of the show for me were their truly impressive and unique tricks. I was especially impressed by an accordion-trumpet ladder balancing act that merged melancholy musicality, acrobatic silliness, and gravity defying risks.
