Sasha Ellen: When Life Gives You Ellens Make Ellenade

Words: Aria Tsvetanova

Sasha Ellen brings her new hour of stand-up to the Fringe. Having previously attended the comedy festival, Ellen updates us on the last year of her life, from the end of a five-year relationship through the trials of single life and online dating.

The show delves into all aspects of life for the newly single. Buying your ex a break-up gift and flat hunting in London alongside the horrors of online dating. Single guys in the audience beware! Ellen does not shy away from exposing you at your weirdest. From men with weird props in their flats to dates who show up wearing no shoes. With visual aids (presentation slides and clicker at the ready), Ellen sets out to answer prescient questions such as ‘Do serial killers have better interior design sense than the average single man living alone?’

Ellen’s comedy is sharp and witty, while she herself is self-possessed (even when someone decides to bring their 12-year-old to her decidedly mature show). She is open and does not take herself seriously, whether the joke is about both her anxiety or her awkward sexual encounters. The show has a decidedly intimate tone, not only because of the small venue, but also because of Ellen’s tendency to make eye contact with everyone.

A funny show that deserves to be performed to a packed-out room.
