In its 16th year at the Fringe, Showstopper! proves to be just as removable as glitter. For optimists, expectations are high. For cynics, doubts that it could be that good swirl in their minds. However, both will be charmed, as this improv musical is entirely deserving of the effusive praise. 

High-kicking over the very high bar they’ve set themselves, the troupe uses suggestions from the audience to create a musical in just 65 minutes. Ours is based around cheerleaders, with the music arranged by the on-stage pianist who create tunes that are tonally inspired by three crowd choices. The first song ‘The Power in a Pom-Pom’ was witty and uplifting, while ‘Shame!’ inspired by (you guessed it) Fame, had the theatre in hysterics. 

The pacing of the show was masterful. Scenes never dragged or meandered into dead ends and the only reminder that it was an improvised performance were the rare snatches of abandoned dialogue when two characters both began to speak. The cast are generous with each other, pulling and pushing the story in new and unexpected (both to us and them) directions. 

Believe the hype. Upon seeing the show, you’ll realise it’s not as good as people say it is, it’s better.
