Táin is an evocative, modern retelling of Ireland’s epic myth, the Táin Bó Cúailnge. Performed by the dynamic duo Mark Borthwick and David Hughes, this intimate show transports the audience into the heart of ancient Ireland, where cursed armies, twisted lovers, mighty heroes, and a magnificent bull ignite a war that shapes a nation. The small, cozy setting is akin to sitting around a hearth fire on a starry night, where stories come alive with each word spoken.

Upon entry, the audience is welcomed with a dram of Irish whiskey and homemade shortbread, setting the tone for an hour steeped in tradition and warmth. The storytelling is compelling, engaging, and profoundly immersive, blending blood, laughter, gender, and magic seamlessly. Borthwick and Hughes each bring their own unique flair, complemented by a mix of modern and traditional music that elevates the narrative’s emotional peaks.

With tales of strong women, love, hate, war, and tragedy, Táin resonates deeply, particularly for fans of works like The Song of Achilles. As a preview show, there were a few tweaks in progress, but the richness of the story will only deepen as the Fringe season continues. This is a must-see for lovers of myth and the power of storytelling.
