Taiwan Season: Little Drops of Rain

Words: Elodie Marriott

4 stars

Little Drops of Rain is an ASMR feast for the ears. This children’s show is experimental and inventive, using a disembodied puppet with only a head and wellies, to portray the protagonist, Hope. In a drought period, she goes on an adventure with a water droplet and fantastical events occur.

On stage and entirely visible, the sound station is almost distractingly interesting. The props are locally sourced, using recycled objects to create high quality noises. During a rainstorm, wet gurgles are produced by tipping a glass bottle, and the wind is conjured by blowing into the microphone through a pipe. The noisemakers look on the performance with sharp eyes, perfectly timing their sounds to the movement of the puppets, which are distinctive and enchanting.

A rock rubbed against a collection of smaller rocks mimics the sensation of feet walking along a road. Numerous textures are used to evoke the imagery of travel and new locations, like rocks scuffed on plastic grass and sponges pushed around a bowl of sand. The sounds fill in where the non-verbal puppets leave off, bringing the story to life by heightening our senses.

The show inspires feelings rather than comprehension, simulating the audience with audio delights.
