The Importance of Being…Earnest? presents a fresh and inventive twist on Oscar Wilde’s classic play, taking the audience on a journey that’s equal parts chaotic and impressive. The concept is ambitious, especially for a Fringe production, but the company pulls it off with commendable skill. The show starts with everything appearing to go according to plan—until the lead actor fails to make his entrance. From this moment on, the play transforms into a whirlwind of improvisation and audience participation, making for a truly unique experience.

One of the standout performances comes from Josh Haberfield, who shines as the beleaguered director Simon Slough. His ability to maintain the energy and guide the unfolding chaos keeps the show on track, even as the original script takes a backseat to spontaneous creativity.

As the performance progresses, it transitions from laugh-out-loud comedy to something genuinely impressive. Without giving too much away, there’s a moment near the show’s climax that captures the magic of theatre—beautiful, and unexpected for this farce.

There are a few short moments when the disparity in the actors’ performances becomes evident, leading to occasional unevenness. Not everyone seems fully in sync with the play’s tone, which can create a sense of disjointedness. However this does not draw away from the show’s concept or indeed plot.

Overall, Say It Again Sorry delivers an excellent production that celebrates both the unpredictability and the magic of live theatre. The Importance of Being…Earnest? is a must-see for those who appreciate creative risks and the joy of audience participation.
