The radio crackles with news and nonsense. A storm is brewing, the water is rising, and something new is coming – something that could be a friend.

Quirky characters and play toy-like props brighten the already vibrant stage. A colourful backdrop, atmospheric lighting, and world-building sound carry the audience into this creative fantasy of two dancers weathering the storm. The camouflage background was used to its best effect when actively paired with the dancing in comedic interactions between the moving pieces of set, props, and performers.

The characters are endearing, charming and capable, and their comedic banter was enjoyable – impressive as their comedic banter was entirely silent. The humour and entertainment was best when it was at its most heightened, as the more understated miming sometimes left a little too much of the conflict and character arc to the imagination.

A few especially lovely numbers, including a confrontation on a bench and a reconciling jig would
have had an even greater impact with clarity on the lead up to these moments. But the dancers moved with grace and impressive flexibility and athleticism. Their use of the stage and easy confidence were a pleasure to watch, and their rapport and ease with each other meant that the tension was always presented in good fun. A creative piece with a visual impact.
