The Magnets bring a high energy performance to the Fringe, full of familiar favourites as they take us on an a cappella journey through the songs of various legendary musicians. Working together with a comfortable and easy rapport in a practiced and crisp style, their charisma together with an engaging lighting design result in an entertaining and fast-paced show. And audience interactions, including guided songs and invitations to dance, made for a surprisingly lively Monday night crowd.
While each song was performed with great vocals and fun arrangements, there were several standout performances. The Magnet’s rendition of “Hit the Road Jack” gave them a fun moment to show off the build up of their songs and highlight the individual skills of their group. “Take On Me” was a rousing crowd-pleaser with great audience connection. And I was particularly impressed by MC Zani’s beatbox solo. It felt like getting a little extra surprise show wrapped up in the larger show. His skills in both his solo performance, and his constant driving presence in all of the arrangements, are quite remarkable.
A fun and upbeat show for both fans of The Magnets and anyone interested in an impressive a cappella performance.
