Nancy, a comedic emcee, tries desperately and struggles epically to get ready in “The Ruckus,” a physical circus romp filled with clowning, acrobatic acts, and Celine Deon  karaoke. 

The troupe’s charismatic leader does not just frame the circus acts as ringmaster and storyteller. Her engagement is very impressive and involved as Nancy, played by Arielle Lauzon, takes full part in the circus action. Comedy meets acrobatics in her farcical efforts to get ready for her Edinburgh guests, and she fully commits to all the slapstick sketches. Splattering falls turn into rolling flips as she tries to find the upside in her struggle with the less than helpful ‘help’ of her troupe. Nancy converses with the audience with charm and high energy, songs and stumbles, and interaction by invitation. Big expressions are matched by bigger athleticism and a big-top sized personality. 

The troupe is very talented, featuring both the expected circus performances along with a few unusual twists on the classics. A standout number for me was the contortionist hoop routine. Impressive on its own, the piece is elevated by its introduction that blends the contorting moves with musical cues, giving the spectacle an extra dose of fun. Performed with confidence and good humour, this collection of energetic circus routines makes for a very enjoyable show.
