It’s no wonder Julia Donaldson has entrusted Tall Stories to carry the stage interpretation of many of her stories including The Gruffalo, The Snail and the Whale, and of course, The Smeds and the Smoos. She is in safe hands. The company does an excellent job of bringing her story to life, while staying true to the original.

If you have not come across the story before, The Smeds and the Smoos carries a powerful, universal message that resonates deeply. On a planet where red Smeds and blue Smoos must never play together, Bill and Janet flee to a distant planet to live together in peace. Their families must put aside their differences and work together to bring them back home.

Geared towards younger children, this production has its young audience thoroughly happy and engaged throughout most of the story, only wiggling towards the final fifteen minutes. Traditional techniques like hide and seek, audience water sprays, and audience participation always work to get the children’s attention when it is about to wane.

The cast do well in multi-role, with the female narrator bringing a wonderful, teacher-like energy that guides the audience smoothly through the story, keeping the narrative flowing. The set, though simple, offers surprising and gloriously executed moments that captivate the audience; bringing aliens, creatures and other planets alive. The creative use of stars, lighting and costume adds a magical touch to the production.

A heartwarming, entertaining show that delivers a powerful message with joy and creativity, ensuring a memorable experience for young children and their families.
