The Revel Puck Circus delivers a joyful and imaginative twist on a classic tale with The Ugly Duckling, their latest production at Underbelly’s Circus Hub. This high-energy, acrobatic retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved story is not only visually dazzling but thematically rich, gently exploring self-acceptance, identity, and friendship in a way that resonates with all ages.

From the moment the cast bursts onto the stage, it’s clear we’re in capable hands. The four performers maintain an infectious energy throughout, weaving slick aerial stunts, silks, trapeze, and clowning into a seamless narrative that never loses momentum. Each performer gets their moment to shine.

Lew, our “ugly” duckling, is never truly ugly, just different, and the piece becomes a celebration of individuality. The story invites children to reflect on what makes us unique, and how those differences are to be celebrated, not hidden. Audience participation is handled with warmth, making young viewers feel genuinely part of the experience with playful storytelling including some self-aware jokes about the Edinburgh festival experience for the adults. The aesthetic is bold and bright, with colourful costumes and clever use of minimal set, allowing the physical storytelling to take centre stage.

The Ugly Duckling is a triumphant start to the day at the Fringe. A rare children’s show that’s as thrilling as it is heart-warming.
