This production from Stellar Quines in co-production with the Royal Lyceum Edinburgh is single-handedly the most poignant, gripping and educational show at the Festival this year. 

It tells the story of Assata Shakur, a leading figure in the 70s Black liberation army who was convicted for murder in 1977 and later escaped prison and fled to Cuba, where she continues to live today. Performed by the writer herself, Apphia Campbell. This performance is nothing less than transportable. She carries the freedom and spirit of Assata Shakur. The emotional depth and brutality endured she during her life is all phenomenally explored on stage.

Alongside this story is the story of Ambrosia, a student played by Tinashe Warikandwa who, whilst practising her rights at the Black Lives Matter protest at the time of Mike Brown’s murder trial, is faced with a series of discriminatory fines. Warikandwa’s passion shines through, and her character growth throughout the performance is inspirational to young women. The original music and live vocals from the cast are magnificent alongside the use of projections that enrapture the audience. Caitlin Skinner’s direction gives a clear translation to the women’s story, yet at times dialogue could be lost when the two were speaking simultaneously. The impact was still transferred.

This production may very well be the most profound history lesson one could experience.
