Words: Alex Grunberg
A contemporary retelling of classical Greek myths, ‘Woven’ brings together familiar names from the story of ‘The Odyssey’ while providing these characters with reimagined roles in a modern setting. The musical follows themes of grief, love, and gendered expectations while focusing on the fulfilling goal of letting go and embracing your own desires.
While the production itself is uneven, the score is beautiful, carried by a very talented quartet of musicians. I found myself reconnecting to the performance when the music began to play.
While many of the songs stood quite strongly on their own, a few highlights were a boast-meets-lament by Aphrodite and a haunting canon on yearning sung by the whole company. There was also a stand-out acting performance by the actress playing Athena, who carried herself onstage with a natural air and professional confidence.
A musically strong show with a lovely, melancholy score that takes a unique approach to the Greek mythology retelling trend in this female led production.
