They’re Just Small Town (Northern) Lads

They’re Just Small Town (Northern) Lads is a prime example of storytelling. Nathan Jonathan’s coming-of-age story about a young man in a working class Northern English town is a well-balanced blend of nostalgia intermingled with the harsh realities of life. What makes the show a memorable piece is Jonathan’s exceptional storytelling skills. Within his multi-roling, he fully commits to the characterisations through physicality and voice, which makes the story come alive and demonstrates why this piece is a solo performance. What is particularly strong is Jonathan’s ability to embody young men in a manner that feels authentic and appropriate; avoiding any cringe-factor which too-often occurs when actors are trying to play this age. His emotional character development from innocence to becoming hardened is also convincing, which further proves the broad range of his acting abilities.

The script itself was well-written with several laugh-out-loud lines alongside hard-hitting truths. The technical elements of lighting and sound effects  were used effectively to support the clarity and depth of the storytelling. And, whilst props and set were minimal, the blocking ensured the piece remained dynamic and engaging – all of which contributed to the strength of the show. The one addition this piece might have benefitted from would have been to find and capitalise on what makes it a unique and innovative stand-out show. Nonetheless, this is an important production for young men to see and learn from, and will hopefully continue its run to reach broader audiences, especially in social education spaces.
